Training and Education

CAPS – A Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) is a professional designation awarded by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) to individuals who have completed specialized training in home modifications and design solutions that allow older adults to live safely and comfortably in their own homes as they age.

The certification focuses on universal design principles, home accessibility, and remodeling techniques that enhance the safety, functionality, and independence of aging individuals. CAPS professionals, including contractors, occupational therapists, and other specialists, are trained to assess homes and recommend modifications such as grab bars, no-step entries, wider doorways, and improved lighting to help seniors maintain their quality of life while avoiding unnecessary institutional care.

CEAC – The Certified Environmental Access Consultant (CEAC) credential is a professional certification that recognizes expertise in home modifications and environmental accessibility for individuals with disabilities and aging adults. Offered by the Accessibility Services, Inc. (ASI), the CEAC certification focuses on assessing, recommending, and implementing home and workplace modifications to improve safety, mobility, and independence.

Professionals with this designation, including occupational therapists, contractors, and home modification specialists, are trained to address barrier-free design, adaptive equipment, and accessibility solutions such as ramps, stairlifts, widened doorways, and bathroom modifications to enhance an individual’s ability to age in place or live safely with a disability.
